Westportif
May 13, 2017
€40
Saturday 13th May is the new date for the Westportif, the scenic leisure cycle which attracts hundreds of people to West Mayo for the weekend.
Over 1,000 cyclists took part last year on a gloriously sunny day and more are expected for the 2017 event. The Westportif is highly regarded
amongst the cycling community and is is now an established annual event in the cycling diaries of people both local and nationally.
Covey Wheelers have announced a special early bird deal of just € 40 per entrant including a special event jersey.
“We have three fantastic routes for the Westportif 2017”, said Aidan Gill, Westport Cycling Club Chairman, “This gives options for cyclists of all abilities. The three distances are 80km, 120km, and 160km for those looking for a real challenge. All three routes are incredibly scenic and are on quiet roads.”
Sportifs or leisure cycles are becoming increasingly popular reflecting the huge growth in cycling as a sport. The Westportif is particularly popular because of the gorgeous scenery and because Westport is so attractive as a holiday destination. The earlier date will mean more availability in local hotels and other accommodation and a surge in visitor numbers from all around the country is expected. All three routes start and finish at Westport Leisure Park and take in spectacular scenery on the coast road to Louisburgh and through the Doo Lough Valley. The longer routes enjoy the lovely views around the Inagh Valley and Tourmakeady and include some challenging climbs. Refreshment stops are provided for all cyclists during the event and at the finish.
Mayo Roscommon Hospice is once again the event charity partner and Seamus Moran, Board Member, underlined the importance of fundraising to the charity saying, “I’m happy to confirm that every euro that is donated by the Westportif or other fundraising goes directly into the provision of palliative care services by Mayo Roscommon Hospice.”
