Westport House Train Tour
October 5, 2014

Join us on a most unique train tour of Westport House Estate, the Quay and also the historic town of Westport. Immerse yourself in a fun, yet fact-filled journey through one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns. Suitable for all the family, this trip will start and end at the newly opened Church Lane entrance and wind its way through the demesne – the ONLY tour to go through Westport House & Grounds – all the way to what was once the beating heart of Westport, The Quay.
You will find out what life was like in the 18th and 19th century. Discover where the original town of Westport once was. Who are Peter, James & John and why are there streets named after them? What is this mysterious pink rabbit I keep hearing about?
On a more serious note, learn all about the tragic accident at The Quay that took the life of 32 young Achill Islanders as well as the devastating effects of The Great Famine on the local people. The train itself might prove to be the greatest attraction of all, especially for our younger visitors. Brightly coloured with all seats forward facing, the train’s distinctive appearance will both entice and entertain children and adults alike.
The tour will last approximately 40-45 minutes and will pass 29 points of interest along the route. It will feature an audio presentation that will entertain and educate.
